9V to Barrel Jack Adapter

This simple cable has so many uses! Plug the 9 volt battery clip onto a standard 9V battery and connect the other end to anything with a 5.5x2.1mm, center-positive barrel jack.

Use this cable to battery-power any device that needs 9V and has an on-board barrel jack - it works great for Arduinos, development boards, evaluation boards, and more!

What is the inside of the cable like? Is it two separate insulated wires? I might use it for a desktop power supply idea.

This should probably be listed under batteries in the prototyping section.
Also, any idea when these will com in stock?

Any idea if this would work with littleBits kits? It runs on a 9v battery and jack, just not sure what the official size of the jack is. Also their pieces are way expensive.

Are there any reasons not to use this with non-9V battery holders with 9V-style snap terminals?

    • Kamiquasi / about 11 years ago / 1

None that I can think of, it's just wires (of course you don't want to overheat the wires, but anything that uses 9V style terminals probably wouldn't run afoul of this).

any idea on the ETA for this product?

My adapter was faulty. I had to cut apart the housing on the barrel jack and re-solder the ground wire. I think this product should no discontinued because its obviously not being manufactured correctly.

It would be nice if a 9V battery housing with a on/off switch was available through SparkFun (hint, hint)...

  • The battery connectors do not have the strongest attachment point to the wire, but if you are careful, they are pretty durable adapters. We've had one bouncing around Tech Support for the last several months that also survived being used in our AVC car ;-). Unfortunately, we do not design or build these in-house so no change on this in the foreseeable future. However, if you ever receive a defective one, please let us know and we can get you set up with an exchange.

I had to perform surgery, cutting open the connector and re-solder the leads. I suggest changing the design to use a hard plastic connector.
These poor little connectors were the death of several childhood toys.

Mine didn't work. I thought the problem was with the flimsy battery connector, but after some wire-clipping, I determined that the barrel part was faulty. I opened it up and found a loose wire.

Great quality

No complaints.

Handy little adapter

Great little adapter. I use them to supply power to breadboard power supplies (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/114) from anything with a 9V battery style clip. A couple of 4-D cell battery holders wired together plus one of these adapters gives me plenty of portable 12V power for my breadboard projects and any other devices I have that require 9-12 V.
